Chartered Accountant (CA) Salary in India (2026 Guide)

All the articles about salaries for CAs have the same round figures. However, this article begins with the placement figures given officially and then describes how the figures manifest in practical experience, cities, and career stages. If the figures are based on any reports, I mention that as well. If the figures are based on ranges given in market and salary reports, I mention that too.

How We Gathered These Numbers

The more updated salary data can be gleaned through ICAI’s campus placement information. In the 64th Campus Placement Programme, there were 2,570 newly qualified CAs, whose salary was ₹13.30 lakh with ₹27.50 lakh being the maximum salary. According to the 62nd programme carried out between August to September 2025, the average salary stands at ₹12.88 lakh while the maximum domestic salary was ₹26.70 lakh from Power Finance Corporation.

The information regarding mid-career salary and senior salary ranges comes from the information provided in salary reports and CA’s working salaries. No one source provides that data.

What a CA Really Earns in India Today

A CA qualification still carries weight in Indian hiring. Few candidates clear all three levels, and employers know it.

The Gap Between Averages and Reality

The averages from the campuses may sound good but the figures have their fair share of high outliers too. According to estimates from Business Standard, the average salary range for CAs in India lies between ₹10 to ₹18 lakh, and that of freshers stands at ₹6 to ₹13 lakh. Hence, when someone informs you about freshers starting off with ₹25 lakh, he/she might be true in saying so, but what cannot be right is someone earning just ₹3 lakh per annum.

Monthly Pay vs Annual Packages

Job websites give you a salary for per month, while the offer letter gives you the annual CTC. An annual package of ₹12 lakhs translates into roughly ₹1 lakh per month after tax deduction. Find out what is the percentage of fixed salary and what is the variable bonus from the total CTC. The “₹12 LPA” offer with ₹2 lakh variable pays you lesser than ₹12 lakhs per annum fixed salary.

CA Salary by Experience Level

Experience moves pay more than anything else. Here are the bands most CAs will recognise.

Fresher CA (0 to 2 Years)

The fresh CAs that come from ICAI placement start at around ₹12 to ₹13 lakh. For those who don’t join through the ICAI placements, there is an amount of ₹5 to ₹8 lakh that is earned after several attempts and articleship experience, whereas rankers earn ₹14 to ₹20 lakh, depending on Big 4 or listed company articleship experience.

Mid-Level CA (3 to 7 Years)

That is when specialization becomes relevant. A CA who has had responsibility for handling client work, closing books on his/her own, or leading a small team would generally be earning between ₹15 and ₹28 lakh, based on their industry. An individual who is still performing the same role as in year one would generally fall towards the lower end of the spectrum.

Senior CA (8 to 15 Years)

The earnings for senior executives, financial controllers, and tax directors normally range from ₹28 to ₹50 lakhs. The salaries of a controller in a listed manufacturing concern and a small trading firm could be tens of lakhs different even with equal experience.

Leadership Roles (CFO, Finance Director, Partner)

CFOs or partners in big companies can get anything between ₹50 lakhs and even above a crore, depending on their performance through stock options and profit sharing. Don’t get carried away by all the stories of crores in social media because most are those of CAs with 15 to 20 years of experience.

Big 4 Salaries: Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC

The Big 4 firms still make up the most popular destinations for CAs seeking to move forward in their careers. This gives an advantage in future career searching, as well as exposure to diverse clients that facilitate learning.

What the Pay Ladder Looks Like

These statistics are rough estimates. They have been obtained from market reports and reported salaries and are not official figures released by any company.

Level

Approximate annual pay

Fresher / Associate

₹7 to ₹12 lakh

Senior Associate / Assistant Manager

₹12 to ₹22 lakh

Manager / Senior Manager

₹22 to ₹40 lakh

Director / Partner

₹50 lakh and above (partners share in profits)

All four companies offer almost the same salary package. It is not about which company you work for; rather, it depends upon the group that you join. Generally, transaction services, international tax, valuation and deals advisory always pay higher than statutory audit.

Highest-Paying CA Roles

Some seats pay more because they carry more risk or need scarce skills:

  • Chief Financial Officer: the top corporate finance seat, with pay from about ₹50 lakh into the crores at large groups.

  • Finance Director or VP Finance: just under the CFO, still among the strongest packages.

  • Tax Director: especially in transfer pricing and cross-border tax.

  • Head of Internal Audit or Risk: companies pay well to avoid unpleasant surprises.

  • Investment banking, private equity and M&A roles: faster jumps, but heavier hours.

  • Partner in a CA or advisory firm: income depends on the practice and its clients.

CA Salary by Industry and Sector

The selection of industry may move your package worth a few lakhs.

Consulting and advisory will come first because of their high billable rates. Banks, NBFCs, and finance companies come second, with bonuses which depend on the success of the fiscal year. Technology and startups have good pay packages for finance leads with expertise in venture capital fundraising, unit economics, and fundraising reports. Manufacturing, FMCG, and infrastructure will pay decent salaries and have clear paths to controllers and CFO positions. Public sector jobs may pay less initially but have a good salary structure and steady hours of work. Also, the ICAI drivers list has some public sector organizations at the top because of Power Finance Corporation, which offered the maximum domestic package in the 62nd program.

Factors That Change Your Pay

Your degree opens the door. Several other things decide what you are paid once inside.

Metro Cities vs Tier 2 Cities

The reason behind that is the presence of big corporate houses and Big 4 offices here. A recently qualified CA in Tier 2 cities like Nagpur can earn about ₹5 to ₹9 lakhs per year.

Cost of Living Check

It may become a burden due to rent and travel costs. It may be possible that a CA who earns ₹14 lakhs in a smaller city saves more than the one earning ₹18 lakhs in the metro city. You need to do some mathematics every month before accepting the job.

Some other considerations include the size of the firm, specialization in the field (direct taxes, indirect taxes, auditing, treasury or FP&A), additional qualifications like DISA, CFA or IFRS, and your negotiation skills.

CA in Practice vs CA in a Job

Some CAs start their own practice. In the first few years, income is likely to be quite low and unstable. But after this period, a properly managed practice may outperform all the salaries you can expect to earn, and the limit on how much you can earn will depend on what you can manage and on how well-known you become. The drawback is that no one pays you on the first of the month. Payments from clients are often delayed, and lean periods do occur.

Skills That Raise Your Salary

A CA degree gets you shortlisted. These skills influence the offer:

  • Data skills: advanced Excel, SQL and Power BI make you faster and harder to replace.

  • Financial modelling and FP&A: forecasting is valued more than reporting.

  • Ind AS and IFRS: important for listed companies and multinational groups.

  • GST and international tax: rules keep changing, so specialists stay busy.

  • Clear communication: a CA who can explain numbers to a sales head gets promoted sooner.

  • ERP tools: SAP, Oracle and Tally Prime appear on most job descriptions.

Practical Steps to Grow Your Earnings

  1. Choose a niche within your first three years. Generalists can be easily replaced. Transfer pricing experts or due diligence experts cannot.

  2. Change jobs at sensible moments. Change after two or three years is more of an increase than that which happens annually.

  3. Register for ICAI campus placement as soon as results are out. Vacancies are filled quickly, and ranked applicants have precedence.

  4. Keep a record of your results. Remember the audit you conducted that was closed prematurely, the tax-saving technique you discovered, or the system you streamlined. Facts do facilitate negotiations.

  5. Learn one adjacent skill. Analytical skills, basics of automation or treasury, make you stand out.

  6. Track rule changes. People who have knowledge of new tax and accounting regulations get the challenging job.

Conclusion

The initial salary of a CA in India is good and increases with time. The rate of increase, however, will depend upon some factors. According to ICAI’s statistics on placements, the salary of freshers is around ₹13 lakh, mid-level CA earns anywhere between ₹15 and ₹28 lakh, while senior level CA earns ₹28 lakh and above. Your city, your industry, and your specialization will help determine where you fall within these ranges.
